The Chief Imams of Oduwoye Central Mosque, Bolaji Owoyemi, has called on the federal and state government to consider enacting laws that would require government intervention in marital disputes before any divorce is granted.

Owoyemi noted that such measures would reduce the rising rate of divorce in Nigeria by making it harder for couples to separate over unnecessary issues.

He made the disclosure during his lecture titled “DARMAT Says No To Domestic Violence” at the 15th anniversary of Daaru-r-Rahmat Society (DARMAT), Owode-Ede, Osun State, on Saturday.

Owoyemi suggests that the law should establish strict requirements for divorce, allowing the government to mediate between spouses before the dissolution of a marriage is approved.

He said, “the government needs to intervene between husband and wife, in a way that they should make it part of our constitution, in Nigeria and Osun State that their will be no permission for the husband to divorce the wife unnecessarily, and vice versa, before the a divorce is been granted, the government must intervene.

“If there is punishment for anyone that wants to divorce unnecessarily, everybody with control himself or herself.”
