Hajj: ‘You lack power to query me’- Ayilara tackles Soun

..says chief Imam not traditional title

The Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Sheik Teliat Yinus Ayilara, has questioned the authority of the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye, to query him over his recent trip to Saudi Arabia for Hajj.

Ayilara in a strongly worded letter, argued that the position of Chief Imam is not a traditional title under the authority of the traditional ruler.

Ayilara stated that he responded to the query out of respect for Yoruba culture and tradition, but emphasized that as a Muslim and spiritual head of the Muslim community in Ogbomoso, he is not subject to the rules regulating the practice of Islam being controlled by Yoruba tradition and culture.

He pointed out that his case is currently in court and that he believes that both parties must respect the authority of the court by abstaining from actions that may affect the case.

He also rejected the Soun’s demand for him to retract the appointments he made as Grand Mufti, Amirul Wa’izin, Khadimul-Islam, and Kanzul ‘Ulama’ of Ogbomosoland.

Ayilara’s letter was signed by his secretary, Ogunleye Sulaimon Ajasa, and ended with a statement expressing his respect for Yoruba culture and tradition while also emphasizing his commitment to Islamic practices.
